1963 - Two admissions on same postal delivery
After my pre-university I had applied to the Guindy Engineering college and also had take the entrance exam for IIT. I must confess that I had not done well at all at the PUC exams by my own standards, even though I got a 1st Class. Based on that I had no chance of getting admission in Guindy College. I did not think I had done the IIT entrance exam well either.
I was getting myself prepared for doing BSc Physics or some thing equivalent . Very very disappointed I was with myself. This performance after doing so well for six years at St.Bedes.
The Cursed Lemon had destroyed my life.
It must have been 11.00am and the post man came. There were two letters addressed to my name. I never got any letters. So it had to be admission letters or regrets. Superstitious that I was I gave it to my mother as she always brought me good luck. She was worried too. So she placed it in front of Gods altar in the puja place and said I should wait for the good time.
Those were perhaps the longest 30 minutes or so. I kept praying non stop saying God atleast one should be good news please….
My mother opened the first one. It was Guindy engineerig college and I had been given admission.
So I said I did not care anymore about IIT. Cannot afford to pay fees and mess bill anyway I said. My mother read it all quietly and then said your roll number is 1.186/64. Well done you have been selected. She said I knew you would get in. I said why ?
She said because you are my son…….
