1956 - Jeji' strange behaviour
We all called our grandma Jeji affectionately. 1956 it was and it was a weekend. I had dreamt that my grand mother had died. She was 75 years old. I did not share it with anyone as it was unpleasant.
I was in the dining hall and my grandma had come out of her bath and was struggling to tie her saree. I went up to her and tried to help her. And then I realised that she was wrapping it in the wrong direction. I just joked and teased her saying she wanted to be a Gujerati today.
My aunt who did not really pay much attention was telling my grandma off for being stupid. Normally grandma would have given it to my aunt nice and proper. But this time she was silent. If fact I heard some mumbling. So I started to tease her saying Ha Ha you are scared of your daughter. Then suddenly I realised that she was standing and drooling all over the floor. Her hand was limp on one side and she was trying to say some thing. I yelled and told my aunt that Jeji was ill. There was something wrong I said.
My one and only favourite grand mother had suffered a massive stroke and died a week later as she could not be fed orally. In those days there was no real treatment for strokes and doctors virtually decided whether it was worth giving medical treatment or not depending on the age.
